beorg 2026.11 - TODO dependencies

November 5, 2026

Org mode is big. You just won’t believe how vastly, hugely mind-boggling big it is. I mean, you may think you’re using most of its functionality, but that’s probably just a fraction of Org mode.

I don’t intend for beorg to ever implement everything in Org mode. The goal for the app is to be a great place to manage your tasks and outlines. If you are also an Org mode user then hopefully beorg gives you enough to get things done with your .org files when you happen to be away from your computer.

This month I’ve added support for TODO dependencies. That is, when you have some nested tasks, you can’t complete the top level task until all the others are marked complete. For example:

* TODO Dinner party
** TODO Buy wine
** TODO Buy food
** TODO Prepare food in advance

You can’t consider the “Dinner party” done, until you’ve bought the ingredients, and prepared the food.

In addition to looking at the headline state, beorg can also look at any checkboxes. For example:

* TODO Buy food

- [X] Eggs
- [X] Pasta
- [X] Cream
- [ ] Parmesan cheese

If I’m taking into account the checkboxes, then until I’ve bought “Parmesan cheese” I can’t consider the “Buy food” task complete.

By default, beorg 2026.11 has TODO and checkbox dependencies disabled. If you think they’ll be helpful then you can enable them in Customize (if you’ve purchased that extension or are a beorg Premium subscriber).

If you don’t use Customize you can also add the following to your init.org file:

(set! org-enforce-todo-checkbox-dependencies #t)
(set! org-enforce-todo-dependencies #t)

Additionally, in this release is the ability for group search results by tag to include tags inherited from ancestor headlines. Look for “Group by inherited tags” in Customize (or set beorg-group-by-inherited-tags to #t in your init.org).

As usual there are some bug fixes (thanks to those who reported them!):

As always, if something doesn’t work as expected, or you have an idea for a future update, I’d love to hear from you.
